Arsenal plays with a focus on defensive solidity and quick transitions using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup relies on a compact unit that sits deep to deny space before looking to hit opponents on the break. The goal is to stay hard to beat while having enough numbers forward to punish mistakes in transition.

In goal, the GK protects the net while the back line operates in a narrow defensive block. The three central defenders, consisting of the LCB, RCB, and the CDM who drops in to form a back three, work together to clear the lines and win the second ball. The LWB and RWB act as attacking wing backs to provide width, but they must track back to help when the team is out of possession. The central defenders look to win the header and sweep behind any high lines to ensure the team remains hard to break down.

The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative spark. The RCM and LCM occupy the central zones to shield the defence and win possession, while the AM plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers. The LCM and RCM must connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back and moving the ball through the thirds. When the team loses the ball, the midfield tries to squeeze the space and press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opposition.

The attacking unit features two forwards in a partnership. The LS and RS work closely together to link up play between the lines and use their movement to pin the last defender. They often look to run in behind the opposition back line or hold up the ball to allow the AM and the wing backs to join the attack. By using two strikers, Arsenal can better combine in tight spaces and create chances through quick one-twos or by making runs into the box.

One major advantage of this Arsenal formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the LWB and RWB push high. This forces the opposition to stretch their defence and leaves gaps in the middle. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders make it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The team is also dangerous because they can switch play rapidly to find isolated wide players.

This 5-3-2 formation is built for a team that wants to be difficult to beat and strike with pace. It is best suited for matches against dominant sides where Arsenal can sit deep and counter at pace.
