Starting Lineup

Senne · Tomas · Stijn · Vic · Marre · Robin · Quentin · Izzy/Lars · Jarno · Lars/Marco/Andres · Pierre

KV Mechelen plays with a high intensity focus on attacking transitions using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opponent in the final third and win the ball back quickly. By pushing many players forward, the team aims to pin the opposition deep in their own half and create constant pressure through numbers.

Senne starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The defense functions as a flat back four with Tomas at right back and Marre at left back. In the center, Stijn and Vic act as the two central defenders. Stijn and Vic must be ready to step up and catch opponents offside or drop into a lower position to cover the space if the team is caught on the break. Tomas and Marre are tasked to overlap the winger when possible but must also track back to protect the center.

The midfield consists of a double pivot featuring Quentin and Robin. This pair is responsible for shielding the defense and providing a link between the back four and the attack. Quentin and Robin work to win the second ball and recycle possession to keep the team moving forward. They must press in a mid-block when the team is not winning the ball high and ensure they do not get bypassed by quick vertical passes.

In the attacking phase, the team employs four players across the front. Jarno operates on the right wing, while Lars/Marco/Andres provides width on the left. Pierre leads the attack alongside Izzy/Lars in the two striker positions. The wingers aim to stretch the defense by pulling wide, while the strikers look to run in behind to break the line. This front line is designed to press from the front and force the opposition to play long balls.

A primary strength of this KV Mechelen lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. By having wingers and attacking full backs pushing up, the team can pin the last defender. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, which can force errors from the opponent. This pressure makes the team very dangerous during quick transitions.

This 4-2-4 formation is an aggressive attacking system that relies on high energy. It is most effective when playing against teams that defend in a low block and can be caught on the transition.
