Starting Lineup

B. Verbruggen · L. Dunk · A. Webster · P. Estupinan · J. Pedro · D. Welbeck · K. Mitoma · G. Rutter · J. Veltman · C. Quomah Baleba · J. Hinshelwood

Brighton aims to control games through high pressing and quick transitions using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use verticality to catch opponents off guard. The side wants to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch to force long balls from the opposition before attacking with speed.

B. Verbruggen plays between the posts to command the area and start play from the back. The back line operates as a flat back four with J. Veltman and P. Estupinan acting as full backs who provide width. L. Dunk and A. Webster form the central pair, where Dunk uses his aerial strength to clear the lines while Webster provides cover. The defensive unit works to stay compact and move together to maintain a high line.

The midfield functions as a five man unit designed to dominate the central areas. C. Quomah Baleba acts as a single pivot to shield the defence, while J. Hinshelwood works alongside him to help win the second ball. K. Mitoma and G. Rutter occupy the half spaces to link the midfield to the attack, with J. Pedro operating in the central area to connect the lines. This group must work hard to press in a mid-block and intercept passes before they reach the final third.

In the attacking phase, Brighton uses a lone striker in D. Welbeck to lead the line. Welbeck is tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of the runners coming from deep. The wide players like K. Mitoma look to cut inside and create chances, while G. Rutter makes runs into the box to support the striker. The team builds play through short passes to bypass the midfield and looks to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Brighton is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. The formation also allows for numerical superiority in the midfield when the full backs push forward to join the attack. By keeping the lines close together, the team ensures compactness when defending and makes it difficult for the opponent to play through the lines.

This 4-5-1 formation provides Brighton with a balance of defensive solidity and attacking speed. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play out from the back and can be punished on the counter.
