Unión (SF) Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Cardozo · Vargas · Torren · Pardo · Corvalan · B.Pitton · Mosqueira · M.Pitton · Rivero · Domina o Morales · BalboaUnión (SF) operates with a focus on being defensively solid and looking to hit on the break. This team uses a 5-3-2 formation to sit deep and deny the opposition any space in the middle. The goal is to stay compact and wait for the transition to catch the other team off guard.
Cardozo protects the goal as the lone goalkeeper. The defensive unit works in a back five that can shift to cover the width of the pitch. Torren sits in the middle as the central defender to win the header and clear the lines. Corvalan and Pardo act as the wide centre-backs who must cover the space if the wing backs push high. Vargas and B.Pitton occupy the wing back positions where they must be ready to overlap the winger or track back to defend the flank. This back five makes it very hard for any opponent to play through the middle.
The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Mosqueira and M.Pitton act as the two central players who shield the defence and win the second ball. Rivero plays as an attacking ten who sits in the hole to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Mosqueira focuses on pressing the opposition to trigger a press, while M.Pitton tries to carry the ball forward to break the line. Rivero looks to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the feet of the striker.
In the final third, the team uses a partnership of two forwards. Balboa and Domina o Morales lead the attack by working together to stretch the defence and press the opposition back line. Balboa acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off to the incoming midfielders. Domina o Morales looks to make runs in behind to exploit the space left by the opposition. The attack often comes from the wings when Vargas or B.Pitton get to the byline to whip it in for the strikers.
A major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close together, Unión (SF) makes it very difficult for teams to find passing lanes. This formation also allows for wide overloads when the wing backs push up to join the attack. This creates chances to switch play and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
The 5-3-2 formation is a reliable way for Unión (SF) to stay hard to beat while remaining a threat on the counter. It is ideally suited for facing teams that play with a high line and rely heavily on possession.
