Scuffet or Sherri stays between the posts to defend the goal. The back line consists of a flat back four that works to maintain a compact defensive unit. Zappa holds the right flank while Augello covers the left. In the center, Mina acts as a ball playing defender and is dominant in the air, providing strength in the middle. Luperto plays beside him to cover space and help clear the lines. The whole unit works to squeeze the space in front of the goal and prevent the opposition from finding space between the defenders.

The midfield consists of a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Deiola or Marin plays as one of the central midfielders to shield the defense and win the second ball. Adopo or Makoumbou provides the other half of the pivot, working to connect the defensive unit with the heavy front line. These two players must be able to carry the ball forward and recycle possession to keep the pressure on. They are tasked with picking up runners and preventing the opposition from playing through the middle.

The attacking unit utilizes four players to stretch the opposition. Luvumbo and Zortea operate as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the defense. In the middle, Gaetano and Piccoli act as two forwards in a partnership. Gaetano works as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line, while Piccoli looks to find the feet of his partner or make runs in behind. This formation encourages the wingers to get to the byline and whip it in or deliver early crosses.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to hit in behind on the transition. Because there are four players already high up the pitch, the team can break quickly and catch the opposition out of position. Cagliari also gains a tactical edge by creating wide overloads when Zappa or Augello overlap the winger. This forces the opposition to defend in much larger areas, leaving gaps in the middle for the two strikers to exploit.

This 4-2-4 formation is a heavy attacking lineup designed for high pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for games where the team needs to play aggressively to break down a low block or chase a result.
