Relying on a heavy work rate and a compact central presence, Genoa operates with a 3-5-2 formation. The team looks to remain difficult to break down by sitting in a mid-block and hitting opponents on the break. This formation is built to control the central areas and use the energy of the midfield to win the second ball.

Leali stands between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back three consists of Matturo on the left, Vasquez in the center, and Vogliacco or De Winter on the right. Vasquez acts as the anchor of the defense, often stepping up to intercept passes or organize the line. Matturo and Vogliacco or De Winter function as wide center-backs who must cover the wide spaces when the wing backs push high. The unit stays narrow to deny the turn to opposing strikers and force play wide.

The midfield functions through a three man unit that connects the defense to the attack. Badelj sits deeper to protect the back line and recycle possession. Frendrup and Thorsby operate as the two runners in front of him. Frendrup uses his high energy to press aggressively and win the ball back high up the pitch. Thorsby is known for his pressing intensity and ability to carry the ball forward from deep. Aaron Martin and Sabelli provide the width, acting as wing backs who must track back to form a five man line when defending.

Up front, Genoa employs a two man strike partnership. Pinamonti leads the line as a focal point to hold up the ball and link up with his partner. Ekhator plays alongside him, looking to make runs in behind the defense to stretch the defence. The two forwards press the opposition back line to trigger a press from the front. When the team wins the ball, the wing backs overlap the strikers to provide crosses or cutbacks from the byline.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Genoa. The midfield creates numerical superiority in the center of the pitch, making it hard for opponents to play through the lines. There is also an ability to press in a mid-block, using the energy of Frendrup and Thorsby to squeeze the space. The team can also switch play quickly through the wide players to isolate players in one on one situations on the flanks.

The 3-5-2 lineup is a resilient way to play against teams that dominate possession. It is most effective when playing against high line opponents where the speed of Pinamonti and Ekhator can be exploited on the transition.
