Livaković guards the goal as the last line of defense. A back five consisting of Gvardiol, Ćaleta-Car, Šutalo, Perišić, and Sosa forms the foundation. Gvardiol operates as a ball playing defender who can carry the ball forward into the middle third. Ćaleta-Car and Šutalo act as central defenders to win the header and provide cover. Perišić and Sosa act as attacking wing backs, providing width and overlapping the midfield to stretch the defense. This unit works to hold the line and defend zonally to deny space between the lines.

In the center, the midfield operates with a three-man group. Kovačić and Modrić act as the main controllers. Using an immense passing range to switch play and find teammates, Modrić dictates the tempo. Meanwhile, Kovačić acts as the carrier to drive the ball through the middle and link the defense to the attack. Pašalić plays as an attacking ten behind the two strikers, pressing aggressively to trigger a press high up the pitch. This trio works to recycle possession when needed.

The attacking unit features a partnership of two forwards. Kramarić and Budimir operate as a pair to push the opposition back line deep. Often dropping into the hole to link play and find the feet of the striker, Kramarić works alongside Budimir who acts as a target man to hold up the ball. The movement of Perišić and Sosa creates width, allowing the forwards to rotate and find space. Quick combinations are used to hit in behind on the transition or play through the lines.

One major strength is the compactness when defending in a mid-block. The wide defenders and central midfielders can quickly double up on wingers to deny the turn. Croatia also gains numerical superiority in the middle thirds when the wing backs push high. The ability to win the second ball in the center allows for quick breaks.
