River aims to control the game through a high press and verticality in a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use quick transitions to catch the opponent out of position. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle while maintaining enough width to stretch the opposition.
F. Armani sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. A flat back four provides the foundation, with F. Bustos acting as an attacking full back on the right to provide width. On the left, M. Acuña pushes up to support the attack, while P. Díaz and F. Medina occupy the central roles. F. Medina serves as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, and P. Díaz uses his aerial strength to defend crosses. The unit stays compact to ensure they do not get caught when the full backs push high.
The midfield works as a five man block that can shift into different roles. A double pivot of R. Villagra and F. Redondo shields the defence, with F. Redondo acting as a deep lying playmaker to dictate the tempo. M. Meza and Á. Correa occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. M. Almirón provides extra cover in the middle to help win the second ball. This group is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high and immediately look to progress through the thirds.
Up front, M. Borja acts as a lone striker and a focal point for the attack. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to arrive. The attack relies on the wide midfielders and the central runners to create chances. M. Almirón and Á. Correa make late runs into the box to provide goal threats. When River moves forward, they look to use combinations in tight spaces or hit in behind on the transition to find Borja.
One major advantage for River is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. The midfield provides numerical superiority in the center, making it difficult for teams to play through the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition when the double pivot recovers the ball and quickly finds the forwards.
This 4-5-1 formation is designed to dominate possession while remaining dangerous on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and can be exploited with vertical passing.
