Lecce aims to play a very vertical style of football, looking to hit the opponent with speed and directness. This intent is reflected in the 4-2-4 formation. The lineup is built to pin the opposition back by keeping many players high up the pitch to force mistakes and create quick chances.
The goalkeeper 1 sits behind a flat back four. The defenders 2 and 3 act as full backs, providing width in the defensive line. In the middle, 4 and 3 occupy the central defender roles, working together to protect the box. The unit tries to hold a high line to squeeze the space, with 4 and 3 ready to cover if the opposition tries to run in behind. They must work together to win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure.
In the center of the pitch, Lecce uses a double pivot consisting of 11 and 5. These two players are responsible for shielding the defence and helping to recycle possession. While 11 works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, 5 must track back to protect the back four when the team loses the ball. This duo is tasked with winning the ball in a mid-block and immediately looking to find the forwards to start a transition.
The attack is direct, utilizing four players across the front line. Wide players 7 and 8 stay wide to stretch the defence, while 10 and 9 operate as two centre forwards in the middle. The wingers 7 and 8 look to cut inside or deliver crosses to the two central strikers. 10 and 9 work to hold up the ball and create link-up play between the lines, often making runs in behind to catch the defenders off guard. The front four are expected to press from the front to win the ball back high up the pitch.
This formation offers significant speed of transition and wide overloads when the full backs 2 and 3 push forward to support the attack. By having 7 and 8 wide, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations against the opposing full backs. Additionally, the presence of 10 and 9 forces the opposition centre backs to stay deep, which creates more space for the midfielders to carry the ball forward.
This 4-2-4 formation is built for a high tempo, aggressive style of play. It is best suited for games where Lecce can exploit a stretched opposition through quick counters and direct attacking moves.
