Starting Lineup

B.CORTEZ · P.Diaz · G.Maripan · G.Suazo · F.LOYOLA · Echeverria · V.Pizarro · A.Vidal (c) · L.Cabral · L.Cepeda · E.Vargas

Chile aims to control the ball and play with high intensity through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in the middle of the pitch and use heavy pressure to win the ball back quickly. The team looks to push bodies forward to create high numbers in the attacking third.

B.Cortez sits between the posts to manage the back line. The defensive unit relies on a narrow back two consisting of P.Diaz and G.Maripan. These two central defenders must stay compact and cover a lot of ground as the rest of the team pushes up. They act as the last line of defense, often needing to step up to intercept long balls or win the header when the opposition tries to go direct. Because there are only two in the back, they must be ready to defend large spaces if the team loses the ball in transition.

The midfield is the engine room for Chile, operating with five players to dominate the center. V.Pizarro and Echeverria form a central pairing to control the tempo and recycle possession. A.Vidal (c), the captain, plays as an attacking ten to link the midfield to the front three. He uses his known pressing intensity and work rate to disrupt the opponent. F.Loyola and G.Suazo operate on the flanks as wide midfielders, providing width and helping to squeeze the space in the middle. This five man group allows the team to press in a mid-block or win it back high up the pitch.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. L.Cabral and L.Cepeda act as wide attackers to pull the defenders apart, while E.Vargas leads the line as the striker. E.Vargas is tasked to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind the defense. The wingers look to cut inside and create space for the wide midfielders to overlap. The front three press the opposition back line to force a long ball, which the central defenders then aim to collect.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in midfield, making it hard for opponents to pass through the center. The wide players like F.Loyola and G.Suazo allow for wide overloads that can create openings. Chile can also use the high numbers to press in coordinated waves, forcing errors close to the opponent goal.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward way to play that prioritizes attacking dominance. It is best suited for games where Chile needs to dictate the tempo against teams that defend in a low block.
