Algeria focuses on a defensively solid identity within a 5-4-1. This lineup is built to sit deep and protect the central areas of the pitch. The goal is to deny the opposition space to play through the middle and force them wide. It is a formation designed for teams that want to absorb pressure before hitting the opposition on the break.

Gouiri stands between the posts to guard the goal. The back line functions as a narrow defensive block featuring Akliouche, Zerrouki, and Bennacer as the central three. Bennacer uses his passing range to help play out from the back. Mohamed Amoura and Cherki act as attacking wing backs on the right and left. They are tasked to provide width and push high, but must also track back to support the center backs when the team drops into a low block.

The midfield is anchored by a double pivot consisting of Weiser and Ait Nouri. Ait Nouri works to shield the defense and uses his ability to carry the ball forward to progress through the thirds. Bensebaini and Mandi occupy the half spaces to link the defensive line to the striker. This group works to win the second ball and compress the midfield to deny passing lanes.

Zeghba operates as a lone striker to lead the attack. He must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move forward. Quick transitions allow the attack to build as Mohamed Amoura and Cherki sprint into space. The team aims to create runs in behind or use the wing backs to whip it in toward the penalty area. They look to exploit the space left by an advancing opponent.

A major advantage for Algeria is the compactness when defending in a mid-block or low block. Having Akliouche, Zerrouki, and Bennacer in the center makes it very hard for opponents to find gaps. The double pivot of Weiser and Ait Nouri provides numerical superiority in the middle to intercept passes. Switching play quickly through the wing backs also creates wide overloads.

This 5-4-1 formation is a highly effective way to play against teams that control possession. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to stay compact and counter at pace.
