Starting Lineup

MAURI · JOACO · NAHUEL · PIPA · CHINCHU · TITO · SANTI · EZE · JOSE · FACU · AGU

Lanús operates with a very compact and defensive identity through a 5-3-2 formation. The team builds its game around being hard to break down and hitting opponents on the transition. This lineup aims to sit deep and wait for the right moment to strike with vertical play.

MAURI stays on his line to protect the goal. The defensive unit functions with a back five where TITO holds the center of the line. NAHUEL and PIPA play as the side centre backs to provide cover and help win the header in the box. JOACO and CHINCHU act as attacking wing backs to provide width during the attack, but they must track back to defend the flanks. The defenders work to stay close together to deny the turn of any attacking player.

The midfield consists of a three man group that works to link the defense to the front two. SANTI and EZE play as the central midfielders who focus on winning the second ball and protecting the area in front of the defense. JOSE plays as an attacking ten who sits in the hole to connect the lines. SANTI and EZE must be ready to drop into a low block to protect the back five. JOSE looks to receive the ball and drive the play forward to support the strikers.

In the attacking phase, Lanús uses two forwards in a partnership. AGU and FACU act as the two strikers who look to run in behind the defense. They often combine in tight spaces to move the ball toward the goal. The width comes from JOACO and CHINCHU as they push up the pitch to overlap the midfielders. The team looks to play short from the back when possible but often prefers to hit the opponent on the transition to catch them out of position.

One major advantage for Lanús is the compactness when defending in a narrow defensive block. This makes it very hard for the opposition to find space between the lines. The team also uses the wing backs to create wide overloads which forces the opposition to stretch. This formation allows for a quick transition from defense to attack when the ball is won high up the pitch.

This 5-3-2 formation is built to be defensively solid and rely on quick counter attacks. It is best suited for facing teams that want to control the ball and play high up the pitch.
