Starting Lineup

Bologna focuses on controlling the center of the pitch and applying pressure to win the ball back quickly in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high pressing game that forces turnovers in the opposition half. The team relies on a heavy concentration of players in the middle of the pitch to dominate games and drive play forward through central channels.

Skorupski plays behind a very high line consisting of just two central defenders. Beukema and Posch act as the primary line of defense, where they must be ready to sweep behind the high line if the opposition breaks through. Because there are no traditional full backs, Beukema and Posch must be prepared to defend large amounts of space and stay compact to prevent being bypassed. They need to be alert to step up and intercept passes before the opponent can launch a long ball.

The midfield is the engine of the Bologna side, utilizing a five man unit to congest the center. Lucumí and Holm operate as a double pivot to shield the defense, with Lucumí often dropping to support the back line when needed. Freuler and Aebischer act as inverted eights to link the play, providing passing range to recycle possession and drive the ball into the final third. Ferguson plays as an attacking ten, tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and make late runs into the box.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Karlsson and Orsolini act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances, while Castro works as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition center backs. The attackers work in combination to create runs in behind or to play one two passes to break the line. This front three works to pin the last defender and create space for Ferguson to operate in the pocket.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to squeeze the space. This creates high turnovers that allow the team to attack quickly before the opponent can settle into a defensive block.

Bologna uses this aggressive lineup to dominate possession and suffocate opponents in their own half. It is a formation best suited for games where the team wants to dictate the tempo against sides that struggle to play out from the back.
