Starting Lineup

Lykogiannis · Lucumí · Posch · Beukema · Aebischer · Freuler · Castro · Orsolini · Karlsson · Ferguson · Skorupski

Bologna plays with a very aggressive and vertical intent using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to control the pitch through heavy pressing and quick ball movement to catch opponents off guard. The intention is to dominate the center and pin the opposition deep in their own half.

Skorupski acts as the last line of defense, often playing a high line to support the two central defenders. Posch and Lucumí operate as a pair of ball playing defenders who must be ready to cover the wide areas when the team pushes forward. They defend zonally and must be quick to step up to set the offside trap or intercept direct balls. This narrow defensive line relies on the midfield to protect the space behind them.

The midfield is the engine of this Bologna formation. Beukema and Lykogiannis form a double pivot to shield the defence and protect the central zone. Freuler and Aebischer operate in the half-spaces, working to connect the defensive unit to the attack. Freuler uses his passing range to recycle possession, while Aebischer drives forward to support the push. Ferguson plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and arrive late into the box.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. Orsolini operates as an inverted winger on the right, looking to cut inside and create chances. Karlsson stays wide on the left to provide width and deliver crosses. Castro acts as the central striker, tasked to hold up the ball and make runs in behind the defense. This front line presses from the front to force long balls and win the ball back high up the pitch.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. With five players in the midfield, Bologna can easily bypass the midfield of most teams. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using Ferguson and the front three to trigger a press. This allows the team to break quickly and counter at pace once the ball is won.

This formation is built to dominate games through high intensity and central control. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back or those that lack midfield depth.
