Because there are no full backs in the traditional sense, these two must be ready to step up and intercept passes or cover huge amounts of space when the opposition breaks quickly.

A massive five man midfield handles the transition and control of the match. Rice plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession when under pressure. Beside him, Shaw and Alexander-Arnold act as wide central midfielders, with Alexander-Arnold looking to switch play frequently with his passing range. Palmer operates in the left half space as a creative presence, while Bellingham drives forward from the right to arrive late into the box. This central block is designed to compress the midfield and win the second ball.

The attacking unit functions with three players across the front to stretch the defence. Kane acts as a target man to hold up the ball and link play with the advancing midfielders. On the flanks, Grealish stays wide to pull defenders out of position, while Foden operates as an inverted winger who prefers to cut inside to find space. This front three works to press the opposition back line, creating runs in behind and forcing the opposition to defend in very tight spaces.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The ability to press in coordinated waves from the front three and the midfield block allows England to regain possession in dangerous areas.
