River looks to control games through a heavy defensive presence and quick transitions in a 5-4-1. This formation is built to stay compact and wait for the right moment to strike. The goal is to remain hard to beat by sitting deep and forcing the opponent into wide areas.
F. Armani guards the goal as the unit sits in a narrow defensive block. The back five consists of a central trio of F. Díaz, N. Otamendi, and G. Pezzella. N. Otamendi and G. Pezzella act as the core of the defense, providing aerial strength and leadership. F. Bustos and M. Acuña operate as attacking wing backs to provide width. While the central defenders focus on winning the header and clearing the lines, the wing backs must track back to support the back five when out of possession.
In the middle of the pitch, the midfield operates in a flat line of four to shield the defense. J. Portilla and M. Meza occupy the central roles to win the second ball and protect the center. J. Portilla is the captain and helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, M. Almirón and Á. Correa provide width and work to press in a mid-block. This group works to compress the midfield and ensure the opponent cannot play through the lines easily.
The attacking side relies on a lone striker, M. Borja, to lead the line. M. Borja acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow the midfield to move up the pitch. The team builds the attack through quick transitions where the wing backs, F. Bustos and M. Acuña, push high to provide crosses. The wide midfielders look to cut inside or deliver early balls into the box. The intention is to use M. Borja to pin the last defender and create space for runners from deep.
River gains a major advantage by maintaining compactness when defending. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very difficult for the opposition to find space between the lines. The formation also offers the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push forward. This creates many options to switch play and stretch the defence.
This 5-4-1 lineup is designed to be a defensive wall that strikes with efficiency. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and require a team to defend deep and counter at pace.
