Bolton focuses on a high press and quick vertical transitions using a 4-3-3. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use creative players to break the lines. The team wants to dominate the middle areas and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition.

Hopkinson operates between the posts to organize the back line. A flat back four forms the foundation with Hartle acting as the right back and Banks on the left. Bergsson and N'Gotty sit as the central defenders where Bergsson provides aerial strength. The defensive unit works to hold a high line to squeeze the space and keep the opposition far from goal.

The midfield relies on a three man midfield with a carrier and a creative presence. Campo and Greaves work to win the second ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Okocha plays in the hole behind the striker to create from deep and find the feet of the forwards. This trio works to compress the midfield when the team does not have the ball.

An attacking front three provides the main threat for Bolton. Lofthouse acts as the target man to hold up the ball and win headers. On the flanks, Djorkaeff and Giannakopoulos play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances. This movement creates space for the full backs to overlap and provides options for cutbacks from the byline.

One tactical advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. The team also creates wide overloads when the wingers move inside and the full backs push up. This makes it hard for the opposition to defend the half spaces and the wide areas at the same time.

Bolton uses this 4-3-3 to dictate play through aggressive pressing and technical skill. This formation is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play short from the back.
