Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Henry (Son) · Agüero (Vardy) · Van De Saar · D.Silva (Mata) · Ferdinand · Van Dijk · Kompany · Yaya Touré · Scholes · Bale (Palmer) · CarrickChelsea aims to dominate through control and high pressing in a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a proactive game where the team controls the ball and keeps the opposition pinned back. By using a wide attacking line, Chelsea seeks to stretch the pitch and create chances through direct attacking movements and constant pressure.
Van De Saar stays between the posts to command the area and start play. The back three consists of Kompany, Ferdinand, and Van Dijk. Van Dijk is a ball playing defender who can step up to win the ball, while Ferdinand and Kompany provide aerial strength and cover. The unit can play out from the back to move the ball into the midfield. This defensive line works as a single block to squeeze the space and deny the turn of any oncoming attackers.
The midfield functions as a powerful engine room with a single pivot and three players operating in the central areas. Carrick acts as the deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and protect the back three. Yaya Touré and Scholes provide energy to drive forward with the ball and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. D.Silva connects the defensive and attacking lines, allowing the team to progress through the thirds. This grouping works to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.
The attack uses three players across the front to overwhelm the opposition defense. Agüero plays as a central striker to find the feet of the striker and make runs in behind. On the flanks, Henry and Bale act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goalscoring opportunities. Henry uses his pace to hit in behind on the transition, while Bale can carry the ball forward to cross on the run. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and win possession quickly.
A major advantage for Chelsea is the numerical superiority in the central areas which allows them to dominate the ball. The wide overloads created by the wingers and the ability to press in coordinated waves make this formation very difficult to play against. The team can also switch play rapidly to find isolated wide players in one on one situations.
This 3-4-3 formation is built for total control and aggressive attacking. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and allow Chelsea to use their technical quality to break the lines.
