Austria National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Alaba · Danso · Posch · Lienhart · Grillitsch · Seiwald · Sabitzer · Laimer · Schlager · Baumgartner · BachmannAustria focuses on high pressing and verticality through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle. By playing with high intensity, the team aims to disrupt the rhythm of the opponent and play through the lines during transitions.
Bachmann operates as the goalkeeper to command the area. The defensive unit functions as a zonal line with a back five that can shift to cover the width of the pitch. Grillitsch sits in the center of the back three to hold the line and win the second ball. Lienhart and Danso act as the right and left centre backs to cover the space behind the wing backs. Alaba plays as the left wing back to push high and provide width, while Posch acts as the right wing back to overlap the winger.
The midfield is a two man unit featuring Schlager and Seiwald. These two players must press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and deny the pivot. Seiwald and Schlager work to cover the ground and shield the defence from direct attacks. They are responsible for recycling possession and connecting the defensive unit to the attacking line. When the team wins the ball, they look to carry the ball forward or find the feet of the forwards to start a break.
In the attacking phase, Austria uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Sabitzer acts as the striker to lead the line and find space between the defenders. Baumgartner and Laimer operate as wide attackers to provide the necessary width. Baumgartner looks to cut inside from the left, while Laimer can work on the right to whip it in or make runs in behind. This front three presses from the front to pin the last defender and create chances through combinations.
A significant tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The coordinated movement of the front three and the two midfielders creates intense pressure in the opponent's half. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads as Alaba and Posch move forward to support the attack. This allows Austria to quickly shift the play and exploit the space left by attacking opponents.
This 5-2-3 formation is defined by its aggressive pressing and rapid transitions. It is best suited for games against opponents that prefer to build play from the back.
