Starting Lineup
Bennacer (Belahyane) · Y.Fofana (Y.Musah) · Reijnders (Cherki) · Pulisic (Chukwueze) · Leao (Okafor) · Santiago Gimenez (Morata) · Mosquera (Gabbia) · Tomori (Pavlovic) · Maignan (Sportiello) · Tiago Santos (Emerson) · Theo (De cuyper)Milan focuses on a low block and rapid transition play through a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a defensive game where the team stays compact to deny space and then breaks quickly once the ball is won back. The team looks to stretch the defence and use the width of the pitch when moving forward.
Santiago Gimenez plays between the posts to guard the goal. The defensive unit operates with a back five consisting of Bennacer as the right centre back, Y.Fofana as the left centre back, and Reijnders in the middle. Bennacer and Y.Fofana focus on holding the line and winning headers, while Reijnders works to cover the space behind the others. Pulisic and Leao act as attacking wing backs to provide width. Pulisic uses his dribbling to work the left flank and overlap, whereas Leao uses his pace and dribbling to drive forward on the right side. The unit remains compact to deny the turn and prevent through balls.
In front of the defence, the midfield operates with a double pivot where Tiago Santos and Theo shield the back line. Tiago Santos stays deep to intercept passes and protect the centre backs, while Theo works to carry the ball forward into the middle third. Ahead of them, Tomori and Mosquera play as two tens in the half spaces. Tomori makes runs into the box to support the attack, and Mosquera looks to find space between the opposition lines to receive the ball and play through the lines. This four man midfield works to compress the space and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.
The attack relies on a lone striker, Maignan, who must hold up the ball to allow the rest of the team to move up the pitch. Maignan works to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. When Milan wins the ball, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition, with Pulisic and Leao pushing high to support the striker. The aim is to isolate wide players in one on one situations or find the feet of the striker in tight spaces.
A key advantage of this Milan formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a low block. The five defenders and four midfielders create a very narrow defensive block that is hard to break down. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when Pulisic and Leao push high to support the wingers. This formation allows for quick transitions from a defensive block to an attacking one.
This 5-4-1 lineup is designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
