Stoke relies on a direct and vertical style of play using a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to win second balls and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The goal is to move the ball quickly from the back to the front to catch the defense out of position.

Banks sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four with Dixon acting as the right back and Pejic playing at left back. Smith and Franklin occupy the central defender roles where they must hold the line and defend zonally. Dixon and Pejic are tasked to provide width and cover the flanks while Smith and Franklin focus on winning headers and intercepting passes.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to maintain compactness when defending. Hudson and Delap sit in the central roles to shield the defense and connect the lines. Delap looks to carry the ball forward while Hudson works to win the second ball and recycle possession. On the wings, Matthews and Chamberlain provide the service. Matthews plays as a wide midfielder on the right to whip it in, while Chamberlain operates on the left to help the team press in a mid-block.

The attack features two forwards in a partnership to pin the last defender. Fuller plays as the left striker and Stein plays as the right striker. They work together to press the opposition back line and make runs in behind. The formation is designed to create chances through crosses from the wide players and link-up play between the two strikers. Stein and Fuller often look to compete for flick ons to stay high up the pitch.

Stoke gains a clear advantage from the presence of two strikers who can trouble center backs. The wide players help create overloads on the flanks when Dixon or Pejic push up. This setup also allows the team to stay compact and hard to break down when sitting deep.
