Starting Lineup

Baumgartner · Wimmer · Schlager · Laimer · Seiwald · Sabitzer · Posch · Alaba · Danso · Lienhart · Pentz

Austria plays with a heavy focus on controlling the central areas using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and dominate the ball in the middle third. The main goal is to squeeze the space and win the ball high up the pitch to create quick chances.

Pentz sits behind a very narrow defensive line of only two players. Lienhart and Danso act as the sole central defenders in this formation. Lienhart uses his passing range to play short from the back, while Danso provides aerial strength to defend against direct long balls. Because there are only two in the back, they often play a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield is crowded with six players designed to overwhelm the opposition. Alaba sits deep to protect the defense and acts as a deep lying playmaker who can pass through the lines. Seiwald and Posch work to shield the two defenders and pick up runners in the middle. Laimer, Schlager, and Sabitzer operate further up to drive the ball forward. Laimer brings high pressing intensity to trigger a press, while Schlager and Sabitzer make late runs into the box to provide extra goal threats. This group connects the defensive unit to the front two by recycling possession and moving the ball quickly.

Up front, Baumgartner and Wimmer form a two man attacking partnership. They do not sit deep but instead press the opposition back line to force mistakes. Baumgartner acts as a pressing center forward to push the defenders back, while Wimmer looks to cut inside and find space between the lines. The attack relies on the midfield to deliver early passes or whip it in from deep positions. This allows the forwards to make runs in behind or hold up the ball to wait for the midfield to arrive.

A major advantage of this Austria lineup is the massive numerical superiority in midfield. Having six players in the middle makes it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes or control the game. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, as the large midfield unit can quickly swarm the ball carrier. This creates many turnovers in dangerous areas.

This 2-6-2 formation is designed for high pressure and total midfield dominance. It is best suited for matches against teams that prefer to build play through the center of the pitch.
