Filan occupies the goal to organize the defensive unit from the back. The team defends with a flat back four that keeps the distance between lines short. Baines and Boyce act as full backs to provide width and support the attack. Scharner uses his aerial strength to win the header and De Zeeuw works to cover the space behind. The defensive unit works to hold a compact shape and force the opposition into wide areas.

The midfield consists of a central duo supported by two wide players. Martinez and Bullard occupy the center to control the middle of the pitch. Martinez often carries the ball forward to break the line, while Bullard works to shield the defence and win the second ball. Liddell and N'Zogbia provide the width on the flanks. N'Zogbia uses his dribbling style to beat his man and move the ball into dangerous areas, while Liddell is tasked to track back and help the defensive line.

Wigan employs two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. McCullough and Rodallega work in tandem to press the opposition back line. McCullough acts as a target man to hold up the ball, which allows Rodallega to make runs in behind the defenders. The wide players, N'Zogbia and Liddell, often cut inside to link up with the strikers or deliver crosses into the box. This creates a presence in both the wide and central zones.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to press in pairs across the entire pitch. By having two banks of four, Wigan can squeeze the space and make it difficult for the opponent to play through the middle. The presence of two strikers also allows the team to pin the last defender, which creates room for Martinez or Bullard to arrive late into the box.
