Starting Lineup

Real Madrid relies on a heavy offensive presence to overwhelm opponents, playing a high intensity 3-3-4 formation. This lineup is built to hunt the ball high up the pitch and pin the opposition back into their own territory. By committing so many bodies forward, the team seeks to win it back high up the pitch and create constant chaos in the final third.

The goalkeeper acts as the first line of defense, working behind a back three that must be ready to cover large amounts of ground. The central defender stays deep to protect the middle, while the left and right centre backs must be mobile enough to handle wide threats. This defensive unit functions by staying compact and stepping up to trigger a press when the ball enters their zone. Because the wide players move so far forward, the three defenders must be ready to defend man-to-man if the opposition breaks quickly.

In the middle of the pitch, the midfield consists of a single pivot supported by two wide midfielders who operate in the half-spaces. The central player is tasked to shield the defense and recycle possession to keep the tempo high. Meanwhile, the two players on either side of the pivot act as carriers, driving forward with the ball to link the defensive line to the heavy attack. This three-man midfield is responsible for squeezing the space and ensuring the team does not get caught out during a transition.

The attacking unit is incredibly aggressive, utilizing four players to stretch the defense. The team employs two central forwards to occupy the opposing centre backs and create space for others. On the flanks, two wide attackers stay high to provide width and stretch the opposition. These players are instructed to cut inside to create numbers in central areas or to get to the byline and deliver crosses. The goal is to create constant runs in behind and force the opposition back line to drop deep.

Real Madrid gains a significant advantage through their ability to press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The formation also provides wide overloads when the wide midfielders and wide attackers combine to isolate defenders. This creates high pressure that can force a turnover in dangerous areas.
