The midfield is the heart of the RB Salzburg lineup. A deep trio of Terzic, Gourna-Douath, and Dedic forms a defensive screen to protect the two defenders. Terzic sits deep to shield the back line, while Gourna-Douath and Dedic work to win the second ball and recycle possession. Moving higher, Bidstrup, Capaldo, and Gloukh operate in the pockets. Gloukh uses his dribbling and passing range to break the line. This massive midfield block makes it hard for the opposition to find space in the middle and allows the team to control the tempo.

Up front, the team utilizes a two man partnership of Ratkov and A. Silva. These two forwards act as the first line of the press, pressing from the front to force a long ball. Ratkov can hold up the ball to allow others to join the attack, while A. Silva looks to make runs in behind. The midfielders look to play through the lines to find these forwards in dangerous positions. The movement is designed to create combinations in tight spaces or isolate attackers in one on one situations.

One major advantage is the massive numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By crowding the center, the team can win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately strike. The formation also allows for incredible speed of transition when the midfielders win the ball and immediately feed the front two.
