Botafogo looks to play with extreme verticality and high intensity through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition by pushing as many players as possible into the attacking third to create constant pressure. The goal is to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike immediately before the opponent can settle.

Jefferson/John stands between the posts to provide the first line of defense. The back line uses a narrow two man central defensive unit consisting of Gonçalves/De Leon and Mauro Galvão. Both central defenders must stay alert to cover the wide areas, as the formation leaves significant space behind them. They are required to defend man to man or defend zonally to protect the middle, often needing to step up to catch attackers offside or sweep behind the high line when the ball is played long.

The midfield functions as a four man block designed to control the central zones and transition quickly. Rafael/Edilson acts as the single pivot to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. Alex Telles and Arevalo operate as the two central midfielders, with Arevalo providing the grit to tackle and intercept while Alex Telles looks to drive forward with the ball. Didi plays as the attacking ten behind the strikers, tasked to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines to break the opposition block. This midfield unit must stay compact to prevent the opponent from playing through the center.

A heavy offensive presence is maintained with four attackers working in combination. Seedorf and Kalou operate as two forwards in a partnership, where one can act as a target man to hold up the ball. Diego Costa stays wide on the right as an inverted winger to cut inside and create central presence, while Loco Abreu/Luiz Henrique operates on the left to stretch the defence. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and deliver early crosses to the far post. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

Botafogo gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the attacking third. By committing four players to the front line, they can create wide overloads and force the opposition back into a deep low block. The speed of transition is a major threat, as the combination of Didi and the four forwards allows the team to hit in behind on the transition with great pace.

This high risk formation is designed to dominate games through pure attacking pressure and relentless pressing. It is best suited for situations where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep.
