Flamengo relies on a vertical style of play designed to hurt teams on the break using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to soak up pressure before launching rapid attacks through high-quality individual ball carriers. The tactical intent is to maintain a compact block that forces opponents into wide areas, only to explode forward when the ball is won.

Diego Alves sits between the posts to command the area and organize the defensive line. The defense operates as a back three with Junior acting as the central defender, while David Luiz plays as the right centre-back and Juan occupies the left side. Both David Luiz and Juan act as ball playing defenders to start attacks from the back. On the flanks, Jorginho works as an attacking wing back on the right, while Gilberto or Alex Sandro provides width on the left. This system requires the wide defenders to cover massive amounts of ground to support both the build up and the defensive transition.

The midfield utilizes a two man pairing to bridge the gap between the defense and the attack. Zico operates on the left side of this duo, often looking to find pockets of space to create chances. Socrates or Djalminha sits on the right, providing a presence to win the second ball and drive the play forward. These two must be disciplined to protect the back three, but they are also tasked with carrying the ball forward to link the defensive unit with the front three.

In the attacking third, Flamengo uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Gabigol stays wide on the right as an inverted winger to cut inside, while Adriano or Edilson occupies the left wing to provide width or direct runs. Romario leads the line as a striker, looking to exploit any gaps in the defensive line with his movement. The attacking unit works to press the opposition back line, looking to win the ball high up the pitch to catch defenders out of position.

A major advantage for Flamengo is the ability to create wide overloads when Jorginho or the left wing back push high. This creates space in the middle for Zico and Socrates to operate. Additionally, the formation offers great compactness when defending, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The speed of transition from a deep block to a direct attack allows the team to punish teams that commit too many players forward.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a solid base for teams that want to defend deep and strike with lethal precision. It is a setup best suited for facing heavy possession sides that leave space behind their advancing full backs.
