LUX or GOYCOCHEA stands between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back line consists of a narrow two man unit featuring DEMICHELIS and MASCHERANO. DEMICHELIS acts as a ball playing defender while MASCHERANO provides the grit to tackle and intercept in front of the goal. They play a very high line to squeeze the space, leaving them to cover large areas of grass behind them.

The midfield operates as a four man block to control the center and provide width. CAMBIASSO and ENZO PEREZ act as a double pivot to control the tempo and recycle possession. ENZO PEREZ looks to connect the defensive and attacking lines with his passing range. On the flanks, SORIN or BALANTA and AYALA push high to provide width and support the attack. These wide midfielders must track back to cover the gaps left by the thin defensive line.

The attacking unit is incredibly heavy with four players positioned to punish the opposition. QUINTERO and FRANCESCOLI operate as two forwards in a partnership, often looking to play through the lines and find pockets of space. CRESPO plays as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to act as a goal threat. On the right, SALAS or SAVIOLA provides pace and can drift inward to create overloads. This front four works to press the opposition back line and win the ball back high up the pitch.

River possesses significant tactical advantages through its aggressive numbers in the final third. The formation allows for wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. This lineup also creates massive pressure through coordinated waves of players attacking the box. The speed of transition is a key asset, as the team can move from a win in midfield to a shot on goal in seconds.
