Starting Lineup

SL Benfica aims to dominate games through a high press and rapid verticality with a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in their own half and create chaos in the final third. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch to immediately launch attacks before the opponent can settle.

Julio Cesar sits between the posts to command his area. The defensive unit operates with a very high line consisting of only two central defenders, Luisao and Otamendi. Luisao provides aerial strength and leadership while Otamendi acts as a ball playing defender to initiate play. Because there are no full backs, these two must be ready to step up and defend space behind them or engage attackers early to prevent them from turning toward goal.

The midfield operates in a box pattern to control the central areas. Semedo acts as a deep lying playmaker pairing with Maxi Pereira to shield the two central defenders. Enzo Perez works in the half spaces to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. Rui Costa links the midfield to the attack, using his passing range to find the forwards. This midfield group must move together to prevent the opposition from playing through the center.

A heavy attacking front line utilizes four players to stretch the defence. Di Maria and Aimar operate as wide wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. Ramires acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Saviola/Caniggia plays as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines and find gaps in the defence. The team relies on quick combinations and runs in behind to score.

SL Benfica gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the attacking third. The 2-4-4 creates wide overloads and forces the opposing defenders into difficult one on one situations. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very hard for opponents to play out from the back.

This formation is designed for total dominance and high risk attacking football. It is best suited for games where SL Benfica faces an opponent that struggles to defend against rapid transitions and intense pressure.
