Barnsley utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Hendrie and Taylor lead the line as the two main threats. Hendrie and Taylor often look to run in behind the opposition defence to exploit space. They work to press the opposition back line from the front to force a long ball. The forwards combine in tight spaces and look to hit in behind on the transition to create scoring opportunities.

This 4-4-2 formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can achieve compactness when defending by sitting deep in a narrow defensive block. Another strength is the speed of transition when Glavin or Redfearn win the ball and immediately look to find the forwards. The wide players allow for quick switches of play to stretch the defence.
