Starting Lineup

Alisson · Arnold · R.Dias · van Dijk · Balde · Rodri · de Jong · Éderson · Gyökeres · Salah · Vini jr

LAFC plays with a high press and intense verticality to catch the opposition out of position. The team utilizes a 5-2-3 formation to dominate the pitch through aggressive pressing and quick transitions. This lineup is designed to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to break the lines and move the ball forward.

Alisson starts in goal to organize the defense and sweep behind the line. The back line functions as a back three with Rodri, van Dijk, and R.Dias. Rodri acts as a ball playing defender to move the ball out from the back, while van Dijk uses his aerial strength to win headers and R.Dias uses his elite positioning to mark runners. Balde and Arnold act as attacking wing backs to provide width. They push high to support the attack but must track back to defend in a narrow block.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing with de Jong and Éderson. de Jong uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward and drive through the middle. He often seeks to receive on the half turn to progress through the thirds. Éderson works to connect the defensive unit to the attack and recycle possession. This duo must cover a lot of ground to protect the space behind them and win the second ball.

The attack features three players across the front line with Vini jr, Salah, and Gyökeres. Vini jr and Salah operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chaos. Vini jr uses his dribbling to isolate defenders one on one, while Salah looks to find space in the box. Gyökeres plays as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and force long balls from the opposition. Arnold and Balde overlap the wingers to whip it in and stretch the defence.

The tactical advantages of this formation include the speed of transition and the ability to create wide overloads. By pushing Balde and Arnold high, LAFC creates numerical superiority in the wide areas. The team can also press in coordinated waves to squeeze the space in the opponent's half. This allows the players to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack the near post or far post with pace.

This 5-2-3 formation is built for aggressive attacking and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against opponents that play a high defensive line and struggle with pace.
