Starting Lineup

Gil · Marcone · Pellegrino · Cuesta · Lomonaco · Montiel · Loyola · Atencio · Hidalgo · Avalos · Rey

Independiente focuses on a defensive identity designed to sit deep and absorb pressure, using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking game where the team stays compact to deny space to the opposition. The goal is to remain difficult to break down and strike when the opponent commits too many bodies forward.

Rey guards the goal as the last line of defense for Independiente. The back five consists of Lomonaco as the right wing back and Pellegrino as the left wing back, while Cuesta, Gil, and Marcone occupy the central roles. Lomonaco and Pellegrino are tasked to push forward when needed, but they must track back to support the central unit. Cuesta and Gil act as the primary defenders to win the header and clear the lines, while Marcone provides cover to ensure the back line stays connected. The unit functions by maintaining a narrow defensive block to squeeze the space in front of the goal.

The midfield operates as a flat four to protect the defensive line. Atencio and Loyola occupy the central positions to protect the space in front of the center backs, with Atencio looking to win the second ball and Loyola acting to intercept passes. Montiel and Hidalgo play on the flanks to provide width and help the wing backs. Montiel and Hidalgo must work hard to track back and help the defensive unit when the team is out of possession. This group links the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding ways to progress through the thirds once the ball is regained.

Avalos acts as a lone striker, serving as a target man to hold up the ball for the midfield. The attacking plan relies on Avalos to win the header or use his strength to wait for support. Montiel and Hidalgo look to provide width, often looking to deliver early crosses or find the feet of the striker. The team builds the attack through quick transitions, looking to hit in behind on the transition once the midfield recovers the ball. Avalos must press the opposition back line to force a long ball and allow the team to move up the pitch.

This formation offers great compactness when defending, making it hard for opponents to find gaps in the middle. The presence of three central defenders allows the team to be strong in the air and win the second ball effectively. Independiente can also use the width provided by Lomonaco and Pellegrino to create wide overloads if they decide to push higher up the pitch.

The 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined setup that prioritizes defensive solidity. This lineup is best suited for games against technically superior teams where sitting deep and countering at pace is the main plan.
