Sporting CP focuses on a solid foundation to launch direct attacks through a 5-3-2. This formation is built to sit deep and wait for the moment to hit in behind the opposition. The team looks to absorb pressure and then use the wide areas to stretch the defence during transitions. It is a lineup designed to be difficult to break down while remaining dangerous on the break.

In goal, 1 stays alert to protect the net. The defensive unit functions with a back three consisting of 6, 4, and 3. 6 plays as the central defender to command the line and sweep behind the others. 4 and 3 occupy the left and right central roles to cover the middle and win headers. To provide the width, 2 and 5 act as attacking wing backs who push high to support the attack. The back five can shift as a unit to defend zonally or drop into a low block when the team needs to deny the turn of an opponent.

The midfield works as a three-man unit to manage the center of the pitch. 10 sits in the middle to connect the defensive line to the attacking duo. 7 and 8 operate on either side of 10 to shield the defence and drive forward with the ball. 7 and 8 often press in a mid-block to win the second ball, while 10 looks to receive the ball to progress through the thirds. This midfield group must work to compress the midfield and cut off the passing lane to the opposition attackers.

Up front, Sporting CP employs a partnership of two forwards, 9 and 11. These two strikers work together to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders. 9 and 11 often press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win possession high up the pitch. While the forwards occupy the central defenders, 2 and 5 provide the width to attack the flanks. This creates opportunities for cutbacks from the byline or crosses to reach 9 and 11 as they arrive late into the box.

A key strength of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. The distance between the back three and the midfield three makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another advantage is the wide overloads created when 2 and 5 overlap to support the attack. This lineup also allows the team to break quickly once the ball is recovered in the middle.

This 5-3-2 formation is a hard to beat lineup focused on quick transitions. It is best suited for facing teams that hold high possession where Sporting can sit deep and counter at pace.
