Skorupski guards the goal and oversees the defensive unit. The defensive line consists of a very narrow back two with Lucumí and Posch acting as the central defenders. Lucumí and Posch must stay compact and cover the space behind the midfield to prevent direct balls. Because the formation uses only two defenders, they often play a high line and must be ready to step up to catch opponents offside or drop quickly to cover runs in behind.

The midfield is the engine of this Bologna side, operating as a dense five man block. Lykogiannis and Holm sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Freuler and Aebischer occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Freuler uses his high work rate to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively. Ferguson acts as the attacking ten, playing in the hole to create chances and arrive late into the box to support the front three.

The attacking line features three players spread across the front. Karlsson and Orsolini act as wide wingers who stay wide to stretch the defence. Karlsson often looks to cut inside to find space, while Orsolini pushes high to threaten the flank. Castro operates as a lone striker and must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. This front three works together to press the opposition back line and create quick combinations in transition.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield. With five players in the central zone, Bologna can easily win the battle for possession and congest the middle. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, using Ferguson and the wide forwards to force the opponent into mistakes.
