Brentford Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Flekken · Pinnock · Collins (Ajer) · Lewis Potter · Van de Berg (Roerslev) · Norgaard · Jensen · Janelt (Carvalho) · Mbeumo · Wissa (Thiago) · Damsgaard (Schaade)Brentford operates with a focus on direct play and a high press using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the second ball and strike quickly in transition. The team looks to compress the pitch and force the opposition into mistakes high up the field.
Flekken stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a back three with Norgaard acting as the central anchor. Pinnock sits as the left centre back to win headers and provide cover, while Collins plays as the right centre back. To provide width, Lewis Potter acts as an attacking left wing back and Van de Berg operates as an attacking right wing back. This allows the wing backs to push high and stretch the defence when Brentford have the ball.
The midfield uses a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Jensen and Janelt work together to link the defence and attack. Jensen looks to carry the ball forward and move into the half spaces, while Janelt focuses on pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. They must work hard to shield the back three and prevent runners from entering the zone in front of the defenders.
The front line consists of three attackers. Wissa acts as the lone striker, working to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Damsgaard plays as an inverted winger on the left and will cut inside to create chances. Mbeumo plays on the right wing and looks to exploit space to hit in behind on the transition. These three forwards press from the front to disrupt the opposition build up.
This formation offers Brentford wide overloads when the wing backs join the attackers. They can also achieve compactness when defending by dropping into a low block with five players across the back. The speed of transition allows them to move from a defensive position to an attacking one in seconds.
Brentford uses this 5-2-3 to disrupt teams that prefer to play out from the back. It is a setup best suited for games where they need to counter at pace against a dominant side.
