Starting Lineup

Martinez · Digne · Cash · Torres · Mings · Konsa · Kamara · Tilemans · Roger’s · Duran · Watkins

Aston Villa aims to control the tempo and break quickly through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to play with high intensity and verticality, using a mid-block to squeeze the space before hitting opponents on the transition. The goal is to win the second ball and use the width provided by the wing-backs to stretch the defence.

Emi Martinez starts in goal to command his area and launch long balls to start attacks. The back three consists of Mings, Torres, and Konsa. Mings acts as the leader in the middle, while Torres and Konsa provide cover and stability on either side. This unit can step up to squeeze the play or sit deep to defend against runs in behind. They defend zonally to maintain a compact shape and prevent through balls.

In the center of the pitch, Kamara operates as a single pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. Tilemans joins him to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to move the ball from deep. Digne and Cash play as wide midfielders who provide the main width. Digne can push up to deliver crosses from the left, while Cash provides energy on the right to overlap the midfield. Rogers plays in the hole as an attacking ten, looking to find the feet of the strikers or arrive late into the box.

The attacking duo features Duran and Watkins working in close combination. Watkins plays as a pressing centre-forward, using his pace to run into channels and pin the last defender. Duran works alongside him to hold up the ball and create link-up play between the lines. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. When the team moves forward, the attackers look to isolate defenders in one on one situations or receive the ball in space after a quick transition.

One major strength of this Aston Villa lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Digne and Cash push high, they force the opposition to pull their wingers back, which creates more room for Rogers and Tilemans in the half-spaces. Another advantage is the compactness when defending. By dropping into a mid-block, the players stay close together to deny the turn of the opposition midfielders and prevent them from playing through the lines.

This 3-5-2 formation relies on high energy and quick transitions to punish mistakes. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or leave space behind their midfield.
