Silva and Isco help to recycle possession and press in a mid-block when the ball is lost to ensure the team stays compact.

Diego Costa acts as a lone striker and a physical presence at the top. He is a pressing centre-forward tasked with bothering the opposition centre backs. He works to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The team builds attacks by using the wide players, Silva and Isco, to pull wide and stretch the defence. This creates space for Diego Costa to find the feet of the striker or for the midfield to progress through the thirds and split the defence with a through ball.
