Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
J. Félix · Nkunku · Palmer · Sancho · Caicedo · E. Fernández · Cucurella · James · Colwill · W. Fofana · SánchezChelsea plays with a heavy attacking intent using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the game through high intensity and aggressive positioning. The focus is to win possession in the final third and keep the ball in the opposition half to create constant pressure.
Sánchez stays between the posts to command the area and organize the defense. The defensive unit operates with a high line using a pair of central defenders, Colwill and W. Fofana. Colwill acts as a ball playing defender to play short from the back, while W. Fofana is tasked to cover the space and provide strength. This duo must step up to trigger a press and prevent the opposition from finding space in the middle or playing through the lines.
The midfield is a five man block that works to dominate the center. Caicedo and E. Fernández operate as a central pairing to win the second ball. Caicedo uses his pressing intensity to win it back high up the pitch, while E. Fernández looks to receive on the half turn to progress the ball. Cucurella and James provide width from the wide roles. James looks to carry the ball forward on the right, while Cucurella works to cover the left side. Palmer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space.
The front line consists of three attackers to stretch the defence. J. Félix leads the line as a striker to link up play between the lines. Nkunku and Sancho act as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. Nkunku makes runs into the box, while Sancho looks to isolate defenders in one on one situations. These three work together to press from the front and force a long ball.
One major advantage for Chelsea is the numerical superiority in the midfield. This allows them to compress the midfield and recycle possession quickly to move the ball forward. The formation also provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This makes it very difficult for the opposition to play out from the back or find passing lanes.
The 2-5-3 is a high risk formation designed for total dominance. It is best suited for matches where Chelsea can pin an opponent back and suffocate their build up.
