Preston aims to control the tempo and control the middle of the pitch using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup relies on a high press to win the ball back quickly and uses a vertical style to attack. The goal is to dominate the central areas and use the wing backs to provide width when the team has the ball.

Will starts in goal to organize the back line. The defense operates as a back three where Mike acts as the left centre back and Carl plays as the right centre back. James sits in the middle to sweep behind the line and direct the unit. This back three can shift to a wider block to cover the flanks when the wing backs are pushed high up the pitch.

The midfield uses a three man midfield with a carrier to link the play. Ash sits as the single pivot to shield the defence and pick up runners in front of the back three. Rob and Paul work as inverted eights to drive forward with the ball and provide support in the half spaces. Nick and Daz operate as wide midfielders who must track back to help the defense and cover the wide areas when the opposition attacks.

Preston uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. Matt and Dale work closely together to combine in tight spaces and use their movement to pin the last defender. Matt often drops deep to link up play while Dale looks to run in behind the defensive line. The attack is built through quick transitions where the wing backs, Nick and Daz, look to deliver crosses or cut it back to the oncoming midfielders.

A major tactical strength for Preston is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield. By using a five man central block, the team can squeeze the space and win the second ball effectively. The formation also allows for wide overloads when Nick and Daz push forward to support the two strikers.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a strong central presence and a high press. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a narrow midfield where Preston can exploit the wide areas.
