Starting Lineup

De Gea · S. Ramos © · Piqué · Nacho · J. Alba · Busquets · Koke · Iniesta · Silva · Isco · D. Costa

Spain relies on a heavy possession game to control the tempo and dictate play. This 4-3-3 formation is built to dominate the ball and keep the opposition pinned in their own half. The lineup focuses on controlling central areas to ensure the team can pass through the lines and manage the rhythm of the game.

De Gea plays between the posts to start the build up from the back. The defense sits in a flat back four where Nacho acts as a defensive wing back to hold the right side. Jordi Alba pushes high as an attacking full back to provide width. In the middle, Sergio Ramos © and Gerard Piqué form a central pair. Gerard Piqué is a ball playing defender who looks to play short from the back, while Sergio Ramos © is dominant in the air and covers space behind a high line.

The midfield operates with a single pivot to provide balance. Sergio Busquets sits deep to shield the defence and recycle possession. Alongside him, Andrés Iniesta uses his close control to carry the ball forward and play through the lines. Koke plays as one of the central midfielders to press aggressively and win the second ball. This trio connects the defensive unit to the attack by playing short passes and moving the ball quickly across the pitch.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Isco and David Silva act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create chances in the half spaces. Diego Costa works as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line and hold up the ball. This formation allows Jordi Alba to overlap the winger and deliver crosses. The attack looks to create runs in behind or use link up play between the lines to break the opposition.

A major advantage for Spain is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the ball. The combination of Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta makes it difficult for opponents to intercept passes. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads using the movement of Jordi Alba and the inward runs of David Silva. This forces the opposition to shift constantly and opens up gaps in the center.

This 4-3-3 formation is a possession based system designed to suffocate opponents through ball control. It is most effective against teams that play a low block and struggle to track runners in the half spaces.
