Japan National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Rin · Barou · Shido · Wakabayashi · Aiku · Misugi · Bachira · Chigiri · Sae · Tsubasa · IsagiJapan relies on a high press and rapid counter attacking style within this 5-3-2. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move vertically through the thirds. The team looks to squeeze the space in the opposition half to force a long ball that the back line can intercept.
Wakabayashi guards the goal as the last line of defence. To maintain compactness when defending, the lineup uses a back five. Isagi sits in the middle of the three centre-backs to command the line. Aiku plays as the left centre-back to provide cover and strength in the air. Misugi occupies the right centre-back role to help play out from the back. Chigiri operates as a left wing back to push into the wide areas, while Bachira works as a right wing back to overlap the midfielders and provide width.
The midfield operates with a three man midfield that connects the defence to the attack. Sae acts as a left central midfielder to recycle possession and find the feet of the strikers. Tsubasa plays as the right central midfielder to carry the ball forward and bridge the gap between the lines. Rin occupies the space as an attacking ten, sitting behind the strikers to press aggressively and trigger a press when the opposition tries to build. This central trio works to compress the midfield and deny the turn of the opponent.
Two forwards in a partnership lead the press at the front. Shido works as a left striker to attack the near post and make runs in behind. Barou plays as a right striker to hold up the ball and allow the team to transition. Width is provided by Chigiri and Bachira to stretch the defence. When the team wins the ball, they look to play through the lines to find Shido and Barou in space.
This formation offers great flexibility to shift between a mid block and a high press. Japan can create wide overloads by having Bachira and Sae combine on the right flank. The speed of transition is a major advantage when Barou and Shido exploit the gaps left by an advancing opposition.
The 5-3-2 is a resilient formation designed to absorb pressure before hitting in behind. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession but struggle to handle quick vertical play.
