Starting Lineup

Arsenal relies on high pressing and control to dominate matches, using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and control the game through heavy involvement in the final third. The team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and use quick combinations to break the lines of the opposition.

David Raya operates between the posts, acting as the base for the team to play short from the back. Behind the midfield, Saliba and G. Magalhães form a two man back line that often sits high to compress the space. Saliba is a dominant defender who uses his positioning to intercept passes, while G. Magalhães provides aerial strength to defend set pieces and clear the lines. This two man unit must be ready to step up to catch opponents offside.

The midfield unit is extremely dense and occupies the center of the pitch to control the tempo. Timber and Calafiori act as the defensive base, with Calafiori often tucking inside to help control the center. Rice works as the engine, carrying the ball forward and covering ground to protect the defense. Zinchenko operates in the half spaces, looking to receive on the half turn and switch play to the flanks. Havertz plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, making late runs into the box to provide a goal threat.

In the final third, Arsenal uses three attackers to pin the last defender. G. Jesus acts as a pressing centre forward, working to harass the opposition back line and hold up the ball for teammates. Saka stays wide on the right to isolate the opponent in one on one situations, while Ødegaard moves from the left to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. This front three works to create overloads and exploit the space created by the driving midfielders.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By having five players in the central corridor, Arsenal can easily win the second ball and recycle possession. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back.
