Matthäus operates as a carrier to drive the ball forward through the middle, while Kroos looks to find the feet of players with his passing range. Ballack plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, making late runs into the box to provide an extra goal threat. This five man unit allows Germany to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly.

In the attacking phase, Germany uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Klose acts as the main striker, using his movement to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for others. T. Müller and Reus operate as wide wingers, with T. Müller looking to cut inside and Reus finding space to deliver crosses. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations. When they win the ball high up the pitch, they look to break quickly through the center or out wide.
