Bolton focuses on a compact defensive presence and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to overcommit before hitting them on the break. The team relies on a narrow block to limit space between the lines and uses the width of the pitch only when looking to move the ball forward rapidly.

Hopkinson guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, the back four maintains a relatively flat line to stay organized. Bergsson and Ngotty act as the central defenders, with Bergsson providing strength in the air and Ngotty covering the space behind as they defend zonally. Hartle operates as a right back to help defend the flank, while Banks holds the left side to ensure the team does not get stretched. The defensive unit works to squeeze the space and force the opponent to play wide.

The midfield functions as a five man block designed to congest the center of the pitch. Campo and Greaves form a central pairing to shield the defense and win the second ball. Djorkaeff and Holden provide the width on the flanks, tasked to track back and help the full backs while also looking to carry the ball forward. Okocha operates in the hole as an attacking ten, using his famous dribbling style and vision to link the midfield to the attack. He is the main creative spark who looks to play through the lines when the team wins possession.

Bolton utilizes a lone striker in Lofthouse to lead the line. He acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to push up the pitch. The attack is built on the movement of Okocha behind him, creating combinations to split the defense. Djorkaeff and Holden look to get to the byline to whip in crosses for Lofthouse to attack the near post or far post. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain possession high up the pitch.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a mid-block. By crowding the central areas, Bolton makes it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to isolate Okocha in one on one situations in the final third, which can quickly turn a defensive recovery into a goal scoring chance. The width provided by Holden and Djorkaeff also allows the team to switch play and stretch the opposition defense.

This 4-5-1 formation is designed to be defensively solid while remaining dangerous on the break. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams where Bolton can sit deep and exploit space in transition.
