Starting Lineup

Rosario Central prefers to play a direct and vertical style of football using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition while remaining very difficult to break down in central areas. The goal is to win the ball in the middle third and move the ball quickly toward the forward line to catch opponents out of position.

Quintero starts in goal to organize the defensive line from the back. The defensive unit functions as a back five consisting of Martínez, Barbieri, and Quintana as the central trio. Martínez acts as the anchor in the middle of the defense to win headers and clear the lines, while Barbieri and Quintana provide cover on either side. The wing backs, Ocampo and Cardozo, are tasked with providing width and must track back to form a flat line when the team sits deep. This defensive block aims to stay compact and deny the turn to any incoming attackers.

The midfield consists of a two man unit with Gómez and Segovia working to control the center. Segovia and Gómez must cover a lot of ground to connect the defense to the attack. One of them often drops deeper to help the center backs, while the other looks to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. They are responsible for winning the second ball and making sure the opposition cannot play through the middle easily. This pairing acts as the engine that allows the team to transition from a defensive block to a quick attack.

In the attacking phase, Rosario Central utilizes three attackers across the front. Ponce acts as the lone striker and works to hold up the ball to bring others into play. Lovera and Solari operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. The wing backs, Cardozo and Ocampo, push high to overlap the wingers and deliver crosses into the box. This creates many combinations in transition, as the forwards press the opposition back line to force errors and win the ball high up the pitch.

A major advantage for Rosario Central is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs join the attack. This makes it hard for opponents to defend the flanks. The team also offers great compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can squeeze the space and force a long ball. The presence of Ponce in the center allows for quick transitions once the ball is recovered.

This formation provides a very solid defensive foundation while offering plenty of outlets on the wings. It is best suited for games where the team needs to sit deep against strong possession sides and hit them on the break.
