Mallorca plays a very direct style of football within a 4-4-2 formation. The identity of the team is built to be defensively solid and rely on quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. This lineup is designed to sit deep and use the physical presence of the players to win second balls and move up the pitch quickly.

Dominic Greif stays in goal to command the area and clear the lines. The defensive unit operates in a flat back four where Maffeo plays at right back and Mojica acts as the left back. Valjent and Raillo serve as the central defenders to hold the line and win headers. Maffeo and Mojica must track back and cover the wide spaces when the opposition tries to switch play.

In the middle of the pitch, a double pivot of Robert Navarro and Sergi Darder works to shield the defense. These two players look to intercept passes and win the second ball to start attacks. Samu Costa and Manu Morlanes occupy the wide positions to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Costa and Morlanes help to spread wide and provide the width needed to stretch the defence.

The attacking work is done by two forwards, Vedad Muriqi and Cyle Larin. Vedad Muriqi acts as the target man who uses his aerial strength to hold up the ball and flick on long passes. Cyle Larin plays alongside him to make runs in behind and exploit the space left by defenders. The two forwards work to press the opposition back line and combine in tight spaces when they move into the final third.

The team gains a major advantage through their compactness when defending in a mid-block. This makes it difficult for the opposition to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to counter at pace once the midfield wins possession. The physical presence of the players allows them to win the header and dominate the aerial duels during set pieces.

This 4-4-2 formation is built to be a hard team to break down through direct play. It is best suited for games against teams that want to control possession and struggle with physicality.
