Starting Lineup

Gazzaniga · David Lopez · Juanpe Rl · Van De Beek · Arnau · Bryan Gil · Miguel · Romeu · Blind · Asprilla · Danjuma

Girona operates with a high press and vertical style of play using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly move it toward the opposition goal. The team looks to squeeze the space and progress through the thirds with speed to catch the opponent off guard.

Gazzaniga plays in goal to command the area and organize the back line. The defense is a back three containing Juanpe Rl, Van De Beek, and David Lopez. Juanpe Rl acts as the central defender to win the header and defend zonally. Van De Beek and David Lopez play as wide centre-backs to provide cover and step into midfield to create overloads. They work together to hold a high line and compress the space between the lines.

The midfield is the engine of the Girona lineup. Miguel sits in the center to link the defense and the attack. Romeu plays as a holding midfielder to shield the back three and win the second ball. Bryan Gil operates on the left to use his dribbling to carry the ball forward and stretch the defence. Arnau and Blind act as two attacking midfielders who find space in the half spaces to arrive late into the box or play through the lines.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership consisting of Danjuma and Asprilla. Danjuma uses his pace to press from the front and trigger a press against the opposition defenders. They look to combine in tight spaces and make runs in behind. The attacking moves often come from Arnau and Blind finding the feet of the strikers or delivering early balls from wide areas to create chances.

A significant tactical advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield. By playing with five players in the center, the team can control the tempo and recycle possession effectively. Additionally, the team can press in coordinated waves, using the front two and the attacking midfielders to force a long ball from the opposition. This formation allows for quick transitions to exploit the space left by a retreating defense.

This 3-5-2 formation is built for high intensity and rapid transitions. It is particularly effective against teams that try to play out from the back and leave large gaps behind their midfield.
