Aiming to hit in behind on the transition, Iran utilizes a 4-2-4 formation to play a very direct style of football. This lineup focuses on getting the ball forward quickly to exploit large spaces behind the opposition. The team looks to use its numbers up front to stretch the defence and create chances through verticality.

Khalife operates between the posts to provide stability at the back. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four with Andarz and Goudarzi providing width as full backs. Hazbavi and Mohazbieh act as the central defenders, tasked with winning the second ball and clearing the lines when under pressure. The back line must hold the line and maintain compactness to prevent being caught out when the team pushes forward.

The midfield consists of a double pivot composed of Razaghinia and Salmani. These two players are responsible for shielding the defence and attempting to win it back high up the pitch when possible. Salmani and Razaghinia must work hard to protect the gaps left by the advancing full backs. They act as the engine, trying to recycle possession and quickly find the forwards to initiate a break.

Iran relies on a heavy attacking presence with four players positioned high up the pitch. Allahyar operates on the left wing, while Mohebi or Ghayedi takes the right flank to provide width. In the center, Hosseinnejad and Saharkhizan play as two forwards. This pairing is designed to pin the last defender and create runs in behind. The team looks to spread wide to pull opponents apart before playing through the lines to the two strikers.

This formation offers significant speed of transition and allows for wide overloads when the full backs push up to join the attack. By committing four players to the front line, Iran can isolate wide players in one on one situations and force the opposition into a low block. The sheer number of attackers makes it difficult for opponents to defend the central areas during a quick break.

This 4-2-4 lineup is built to catch opponents on the break and use direct passing to bypass the midfield. It is best suited for matches where the opposition plays a high line and leaves space to exploit.
