Bournemouth Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Boruc (Begovic/Godwin) · Smith (Francis) · Elphick (Young) · S. Cook (Ake) · Daniels (Cummings) · O’Driscoll (L. Cook) · Arter (Surman/Purches) · Fraser (Brooks) · Pugh (Stanislas) · Wilson (MacDougall) · Fletcher (Defoe/Solanke)Bournemouth look to win the second ball and strike quickly with a direct 4-4-2. This formation relies on a hard working unit that seeks to win possession and hit the opposition on the transition. The team wants to play a vertical game that moves the ball quickly from the back to the front line to catch the defense off guard.
Boruc starts in goal to command the area and clear the lines when needed. In front of him, the back four consists of Smith at right back and Daniels at left back. Smith and Daniels are tasked to hold the line and provide cover when the team is under pressure. Elphick and S. Cook act as the central defensive pair, where Elphick works to win the header and S. Cook provides cover behind the line. The defensive unit works to maintain a compact block to deny space between the lines.
The midfield is a flat four designed to squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opposition. Arter and O’Driscoll operate in the center to protect the defense and win the ball in a mid-block. Arter acts to shield the defense while O’Driscoll looks to carry the ball forward to link play. On the flanks, Fraser and Pugh work to track back and support the full backs. Fraser and Pugh must stay wide to stretch the defence during build up and then tuck in to help the central players.
The attack features two forwards in a partnership, with Fletcher and Wilson leading the line. Fletcher works as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front and disrupt the opposition build up. Wilson plays as the striker who looks to find the feet of the striker or run in behind the defense. The two forwards combine in tight spaces to create chances, often looking for the winger to pull wide or for a midfielder to arrive late into the box.
Bournemouth gain a tactical advantage through their ability to press in a mid-block and win the second ball. The wide players, Fraser and Pugh, help create wide overloads when Smith or Daniels overlap the winger. This setup allows the team to stay compact when defending and break quickly once possession is regained.
This 4-4-2 lineup is built to play a direct and physical game. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back or teams that leave large spaces behind their defensive line.
