Milan Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Mike (Maignan) · Malick (Thiaw) · Matteo (Gabbia) · Fikayo (Tomori) · Yunus (Musah) · Youssuf (Fofana) · Tijjani (Reijnders) · Alex (Jimenez) · Rafael (Leao) · Tammy (Abraham) · Samuel (Chukwueze)Milan aims to control matches through high pressing and quick transitions using a 3-4-3. This formation is built to play a vertical game that looks to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opponent on the break. By using three attackers and two wide midfielders, the lineup creates constant threats across the pitch.
Mike stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Matteo, Fikayo, and Malick. Fikayo and Malick act as wide centre-backs who can cover the spaces behind the midfield, while Matteo sits central to win headers and clear the lines. This trio works together to maintain a high line and squeeze the space between the defense and midfield.
The midfield works in a four man unit to bridge the gap between the defense and the attack. Tijjani and Youssuf occupy the central roles, where Tijjani works to carry the ball forward and Youssuf looks to intercept passes and shield the defense. On the flanks, Alex and Yunus act as wide midfielders who provide width and support the wingers. These players are responsible for tracking back to help the defenders and then pushing up to join the attack.
In the attacking third, Milan employs three forwards to stretch the opposition. Tammy acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Samuel and Rafael operate as wide attackers, with Samuel looking to cut inside from the right and Rafael looking to cross from the left. The movement of these three players is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wide midfielders to overlap the wingers.
One major strength of this Milan lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having Samuel, Rafael, and Tammy all press from the front, the team can win it back high up the pitch. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads, as Alex and Yunus can push high to double up on opposing wingers. This forces the opposition to defend in much larger areas of the pitch.
This 3-4-3 formation provides a heavy attacking presence that is very difficult to track. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line or struggle to deal with intense pressure in their own half.
